Joseph Scerbo

Obituary of Joseph F. Scerbo

Joseph Scerbo left us to be with his Lord and Savior on November 19, 2020. He also joined the welcoming embrace of his loving parents, who predeceased him, Giuseppe and Maria.

Joseph was born in Jersey City on October 5, 1951, the third of three siblings: his sister Phyllis and his brother Anthony.

Being the youngest, he was raised with great attention and devotion by his loving parents. He was a very intelligent youngster and demonstrated this in his excellent school work.

He attended St. Peter's Prep and the school now named New Jersey City University. He studied film while at the university.

He had the ability to save and recall important dates and facts which made him quite an expert on trivia of all sorts. He loved photography and took many photos. He had a wonderful sense of humor which endeared him to his many friends and cousins. He was a great fan of musical entertainment and had a vast repertoire of factual information on many of the rock groups ranging from the early fifties to the present.

He was talented in his ability to communicate with many people who spoke other languages. Being the son of Italian immigrants, speaking their language was a gift he received from his parents and he used it whenever the need arose. He was also conversant in German, which he learned in school.  His exposure to those around him gave him the ability to also converse in Spanish. His language skills were also supplemented by the years of Latin he was required to study in school.

Joseph's Father passed away when Joseph was a high school freshman. As a result, his later care relied heavily on attention and devotion provided by his Mother. She cared for him through his bouts with illness until her passing in 2002. It was at that time that Joseph entered the Nursing Home now named Alaris Health at the Fountains in Secaucus, New Jersey.

Our family would like to commend the Alaris personnel for the excellent care provided for Joseph in his time there. Also worthy of mention is the final attention provided by their Hospice service.

The viewing for Joseph will take place at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home in Pompton Plains on Tuesday November 24 at 12 Noon. A service will be held at 1 pm at the funeral home, and burial will follow at the First Reformed Cemetery in Pompton Plains.

Due to COVID 19 regulations, the funeral home is limited to a capacity of 37. Masks are required, and contact tracing information will be taken at the door upon arrival.
