Allis had one sister, Laila Dahl of Calverton, NY who died in 2012.
Allis was Baptized, Confirmed and Married at Bethany Lutheran Church in Bay Ridge. A talented piano player, she accompanied the Sunday School choir during performances and could still play her favorite hymns by heart until recently. Allis had a quiet, but strong faith that stayed with her all her life.
Allis enjoyed her professional career as an Executive Secretary and was highly-regarded by all who worked with her. Upon graduation, she started work for Katharine Gibbs School and then States Marine Lines before taking a break to raise her children. Allis returned back to the workforce when her children were older and enjoyed many wonderful years in the International Sales Division of United States Shipping Lines where she was known for her diligent work ethic, intelligence and quick-wit.
Allis married the love of her life, Herbert Johansen in 1958 and they enjoyed 48 happy years together. They began married life in Bay Ridge, before moving to Seaford, NY and finally settling in Westfield, NJ to raise their children.
Allis was a very proud Norwegian-American and held true to her roots. She was fluent in the language and always enjoyed the opportunity to speak with fellow Norwegians. Allis’s favorite holiday was Christmas Eve and she made it a very special event for her family with Norwegian traditions inc; delicious food, Risgrot (“find-the-nut in the pudding”) dessert and always a personal visit from Santa!
After retirement, Allis and Herb moved to The Villages in Lady Lake, FL where they enjoyed ten fun active years, exploring new hobbies and creating memories with old and new friends before Herb passed away in 2006.
Allis enjoyed life to the fullest and knew there was nothing better than ending the day with a Dove chocolate! She was known for her infectious laugh, impressive punctuality and consistent selflessness. Allis enjoyed many talents, including crocheting, needlework and painting. She was known for making beautiful blankets for charity and generously sharing her handmade gifts. She was also fond of meeting new people, learning about different countries, and keeping up with world politics. She was a firm believer in bragging about her grandchildren, and one of her greatest joys was dividing her bingo winnings 8 ways. Allis never forgot a birthday, and made all around her feel smart, special, and loved.
Allis was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother and MorMor. She is survived by her 3 children and 8 beloved grandchildren: Susan (Patrick) Shiels of Pelham, NY and PJ, Christian & Anna; Glenn (Debbie) Johansen of Orinda, CA and Trevor, Justin & Erik; and Steven (Patti) Johansen of Lisle, IL and Heather & Marisa.
