Carl Ronald Edwards, a longtime resident of New York City, died Friday, February 7, 2020 at a long-term care facility in Wayne, NJ, just days after celebrating his 83rd birthday.
Born in Paterson, Carl was the son of Carl Irving Edwards and Phoebe Marie (Smart) Edwards. He was raised in Pompton Plains, and graduated Butler High School in 1955.
As the son of very active Pequannock residents, Carl became active in town, too. He served on the board that introduced a township library to the municipal hall in the 1960s, and co-wrote a book with his father on Pequannock Township, published in 1956.
He went on to study at Oberlin College before earning his degree in Musicology from New York University. His career was spent working in Sales at high-end retailers like Bergdorf Goodman, Tiffany's, Lord & Taylor and the Metropolitan Opera. He had been a longtime fan of the opera, and earning a position there was the marriage of passion and profession. He was a lucky man to spend his life doing work that he loved.
Together with his partner of 51 years, Robert Cantell, Carl was an active parishioner of St. Bartholomew's Church in New York City, and served as a Eucharistic Minister there.
Carl was predeceased by Robert in 2011. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Joan Carbone and Patricia Marie Hellyer. He is survived by his niece, Amy Patterson and her husband Michael, and their daughter Phoebe; his nephew, John Hellyer and his husband Michael Shera; his nephew, Michael Carbone; and his brother-in-law, Ken Hellyer and his wife Sue.
The family will hold a private graveside burial in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations to WQXR (New York's Classical Music Radio Station) in Carl's memory would be greatly appreciated by his family.
