Obituary of George M. Ball

On Friday, November 29, 2019, George M. Ball, 90 yrs old, of Pompton Plains was

taken unexpectedly to his eternal home to be with his Lord and Savior. George was

surrounded by his loving family and died peacefully at Chilton Memorial Hospital,

Pompton Plains, NJ. George will be sadly missed by not only his family but to all his

friends as well. Born on March 26,1929, in Brooklyn, NY. He was a devoted husband,

father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Married to the love of his life, Barbara, for 65

years, they shared a wonderful life together.

 

George lived a very full life to include many hobbies and activities. He loved to try

many things and was never afraid to tackle a challenge. George loved woodworking,

working around his home, gardening, camping, bike riding, sailing, ice skating, singing

and playing the piano. All of these activities were shared with his family. For many

years he sang in the choir of the First Reformed Church and other local musical

performances.

 

George was also a veteran. He served three years in the National Guard. At the

outbreak of the Korean War, George enlisted in the United States Navy where he

served for 5 years as a trained hospital corpsman and laboratory technician.

Following his Naval service, George attended and graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson

University as a chemistry major.

 

For 37 years, George was employed as a chemist in the field of crystal growing to be

applied to many laser technologies. In his retirement years, during summer months,

George and Barbara enjoyed camping on their lake property.

 

George is survived by his wife Barbara Ball; six children, Kathryn Dontje; David Ball and

companion Carol; Carolyn Jackson and husband Paul; Deborah Antonowich and

husband Stan; Brenda Reichard and husband Ed; Andrew Ball and wife Joy. He is

blessed with 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and 2 more on the way. Preceded

in death were his father, George Milton Ball; mother, Evelyn Houghton Ball; brother,

John Houghton Ball.

 

A memorial service will be held 11 am Saturday, December 7 at the First Reformed Church, Pompton Plains.
