Obituary of Thomas S. McGrath

Thomas S. McGrath, a resident of Florham Park, formerly of Bedminster, peacefully passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2019 surrounded by his family.

 

Thomas was born in Jersey City, but was raised in Hartwick, N.Y.  He returned to New Jersey in high school and graduated from Garfield High School in 1961.  Thomas met his wife, Grace Marie Castellano, in 1963 and they were married in 1966.Their song was “I Will Wait For You” from the 1964 French film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.  The couple bought an old farmhouse in his childhood hometown of Hartwick, where Thomas served at one time as Assistant Fire Chief for the town.

 

Thomas worked in his early career as a Draftsman.   He eventually graduated from SUNY Oneonta with a Bachelor of Science in Land Surveying.   He worked at several engineering firms throughout his career.  He taught at Middlesex Community College and at New Jersey Institute of Technology.  One of his proudest achievements was crafting the curriculum for the Bachelor of Science degree in Surveying at NJIT.  Thomas was honored many times throughout his career from the New Jersey Society of Professional Land Surveyors.He wrote multiple articles for their professional magazine, gave workshops at their annual convention, and acted as a keynote speaker as well.  In 1999, he was honored with the William T. Murray Lifetime Achievement Award.  In 2014, he finally published his own book on Land Surveying,How to Survey Land with Metes And/or Bounds.

 

Thomas is survived by his wife, Grace;  daughter, Christina McGrath and her wife, Maureen Roger;  grandson Richard Geer and his wife Heather Lynn;  great-grandson, James Geer; granddaughter, Heather Geer;  brothers:  John (deceased) of Hartwick, New York;  James of Cooperstown, New York and Frank of Greer, South Carolina, sisters:  Mary McGrath of Annapolis, Maryland; Helen Senmartin of Belleville, New Jersey;  and Ann Kane of East Earl, Pennsylvania.

 

Family and Friends visitation will be on Sunday, December 1, 2019 from 2pm – 5pm at M. John Scanlan Funeral Home located at 781 Newark Pompton Turnpike, Pompton Plains, NJ 07444.  Cremation will be private.

 

Funeral Mass will be at 11:00am Monday, December 2, 2019 at St Mary’s Catholic Church located at 17 Pompton Ave., Pompton Lakes, NJ 07442.

 

In lieu of Flowers, donations can be made to the New Jersey Land Surveyors Scholarship Foundation in the name of Thomas S. McGrath.
