Obituary of Margaret C. Troast

Margaret C. Troast, 88, of Pompton Plains, formerly of Lincoln Park and Clifton, died July 29, 2019.

Peg was born and raised in Passaic, New Jersey. She graduated from Passaic High School, and went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree from Newark State Teacher's College and a post-graduate degree in library science from William Paterson College. She was passionate about her family, her faith, her music, and her career as an educator.

While in a youth group at the First Presbyterian Church in Passaic, Peg met her future husband, John Troast. The two were married on August 22, 1953. Settling in Clifton, they raised five children together, and remained active in both the Passaic Church and the Wallington First Presbyterian Church, where for years Peg served as choir director, choir member, organist, deacon and elder.

While caring for her large family, Peg worked as a teacher and school librarian, first for the city of Passaic and later in Bloomfield. She worked hard both at home and in school, and gave her children a wonderful childhood. Times spent at Seaside Park every summer were most special to the family, and are a tradition that continue to this day.

Peg and John put their family before anything else, and their children are so grateful for their loving care. They loved to spend family time together. Peg was blessed with many grandchildren who would see her often.

After retiring, Peg traveled to all 50 states, and would regularly join bus trips. She also enjoyed getting in her car to visit friends and family both in and out of state. Peg's passion for music continued, and she shared her talents at the piano and organ, and would play in duets whenever she could. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.

Following John's death in 1996, Peg moved to Lincoln Park. She was able to travel to Jensen Beach, Florida, where she would escape the cold New Jersey winters for the last 20 years.

Peg is survived by her children, Susan Soroko and her husband Samuel, Catherine Lueck, Steven Troast and his wife Tina, Carolyn Troast, and Douglas Troast and his wife Carla; her brother, Theodore Connors and his wife Elaine; and her grandchildren, Jackie Husstege and her husband PJ, Mike Soroko and his wife Nicole, John Lueck, Alyssa Lueck, Sarah Troast, Billy Troast, Maggie Troast, Jared Troast, and Jacob Troast; as well as her great-granddaughter, Samantha Husstege. She is also survived by her niece, Lisa Doctor, and her nephews, Dave Welsh, Tom Welsh, and Paul Thistle. She was predeceased by her husband, John, her granddaughter, Joan Marie Troast, as well as her sisters, Dorothy Zabrowski and Jean Welsh.

Visiting hours will be 4-8 pm Wednesday at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains. A funeral service will be held 1 pm Thursday at Cedar Crest Chapel, Pompton Plains. Cremation will be private.
