Obituary of Arthur Porta

Arthur Porta, 88, of Butler, passed away on February 4, 2019.

Arthur grew up in Wayne, NJ and graduated from Pompton Lakes HS in 1948. Even as a child he loved to tinker and fix things, taking apart and putting back together his brand new bike at five years old. After HS he enlisted in the Navy. After serving our country he went to Newark College of Engineering, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked at Curtis Wright and spent the rest of his work career as a Program Manager at Singer-Kearfott. Art was responsible for many government contracts and could be found walking the production floors and testing areas trouble shooting and ensuring his co-workers had the necessary tools and materials to perform their jobs.

Art and his friends formed a cabinet making business they ran for many years after their “day jobs.” One of the unique projects they built was the round alter for the Pompton Valley Presbyterian Church across from Pequannock Township HS. He raised his family in Pompton Plains and eventually moved to Butler, NJ where he happily retired. His most favorite place to be was “the Cottage” on Page’s Lake in Pennsylvania where he enjoyed fishing, boating, and relaxing with family and friends under his favorite tree or around a bonfire. When he wasn’t fixing something around the cottage he could be found untangling fishing lines down by the lake for his 9 grandchildren.

Arthur is survived by his children, Sandy LaCorte and her husband Bob, Michael Porta and his wife Margie, and Steven Porta and his wife Donna; his dearly loved sister, Joan Kuser; his grandchildren, Ryan, Brendan, Justin, Shawn, Devin and Darrin LaCorte, and Michael, Eric and Erica Porta; and his nieces, Debbie Pecchioni, Janet Komarnicki and Karen Kuser and their families.  He was predeceased by his son, Gary Alan Porta; and his much-loved brother in-law, Richard "Alan" Kuser.

Visiting hours will be held from 12:00 to 2:30 pm Sunday, February 10 at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home.  A memorial service will conclude the visitation at 2:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Arthur's memory to American Legion Post 242 or Disabled American Veterans would be greatly appreciated by his family.
