Alexis Monell Joseph, 71, of Kinnelon, passed away on April 26, 2018.
Raised in Newburgh, NY, Alexis graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with a degree in Art. She lived for several years in Ridgewood, NJ and most recently in Kinnelon, NJ. She had a successful career as a retailer, first as an executive for Bloomingdale's and Macy's, and later as the founder and ownerof Burton & Lovejoy in Paramus, NJ, a unique home decor storeshe opened and created and which drew customers and interior designers from across the metropolitan area. While in retail, Alexis enjoyed several overseas trips purchasing for her business. Alexis and her husband Rich recently enjoyed a three week trip to China, only the beginning of a long list of places they planned to visit after Rich’s retirement.
After retiring from retail, Alexis returned to the art world. She painted in her home studio in Kinnelon, on art retreats in various locations from the south of France to the mountains of Colorado, and she painted various pieces for her family. Her works, mostly pastel landscapes, magically capture movement and light. She received many awards in art shows throughout northern New Jersey.
Alexis was devoted to her family and close friends, all of whom cherished her warmth, humor and willingness to speak her mind. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Richard Joseph; her daughter Kimberly Cannon-Anderson and her son-in-lawMichael Anderson; her brother, Lloyd Monell, Jr. and his wife Deanna; her sister, Sherry Warters; her grandchildren, LindsayAlexis Cannon and Tucker Flynn Cannon, and her beloved bearded collie, Murphy.
Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 pm Tuesday, May 1 at the Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains, New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Alexis to Morristown Medical Center would be greatly appreciated by the family.
