Lewis Arthur, 95, of Sullivan, New Hampshire, formerly a longtime resident of Pequannock Township, died at home Tuesday, April 10, 2018 in the care of his family.
Born in Paterson, Lew was the son of William and Helen Arthur. Raised in Pequannock, he attended school there before entering the Navy. Serving the nation during World War II, Lew flew Hellcats and was a navigator on aircrafts. He was a member of the first generation of pilots to fly jets for the Navy.
Marrying Dorothy Billert on August 31, 1946, the couple settled in Pequannock, where they raised three children. After retiring from the Navy, Lew started his career as a police officer, employed by the Pequannock Police Department. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant before retiring.
He then went to work for Merrill Lynch, and was tasked as a security driver for Chairmen Donald Regan and William Shryer.
Lew was a longtime volunteer fireman with Pequannock Fire Company #1 (which had been founded by his father, William Arthur).
Lew was sadly predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, in 2004, after they enjoyed 58 years of marriage together. He is survived by his children, Janis Arthur, Pam Banks, and Glenn Arthur; his grandchildren, Matthew Vanderberg, Erin Vanderberg, Jennifer Arthur, and Parker Traynor; and his great-granddaughter, Cassidy Louise Vanderberg.
A funeral will be held 10 am Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at First Reformed Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be Sunday 2-6 pm at the funeral home.
