Obituary of Doris Agnes Anzalone
Doris Agnes Anzalone, 86, of Pompton Plains, formerly of Allendale, died at home Friday, September 22, 2017.
Born in the Bronx, Doris was the only child of John and Agnes German. At the age of 5, she met her life long friend Ellen Constantine, and the two became like sisters.
Ellen introduced Doris to Salvatore Anzalone -- the man Doris would marry on July 12, 1952. Doris and Sal settled in the Bronx. Sadly their firstborn son, Ardan, passed away from SIDS in 1955. Then followed two daughters, and the family moved to Allendale, NJ. where they lived in a two family home with Doris's parents, John & Agnes German, for many years.
With a deep appreciation of nature and wildlife, Doris was a committed environmentalist. Doris and Sal would bring their young children to Budd Lake, and then to their summer home at Lake Lookover in Hewitt, NJ to spend summers in the country, when the family was living in the Bronx. There, the family would enjoy swimming, hiking, boating and relaxing on warm summer nights. Doris loved her flower gardens in Allendale, and took great enjoyment in birdwatching.
Doris held a long career in the medical field, first in doctors offices, and later in medical records at Valley Hospital, where she worked for more than 25 years before retiring. She loved to travel. After retirement, the two went on great adventures together, including a four-month RV journey to Alaska, and other RV trips out west and the southeastern US, including Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia where Ellen had moved. They also went on safari in Africa, a trip to the Galapagos Islands, and a few trips to Europe. Doris traveled to Germany with her 2 daughters bringing her parents' ashes back to be buried in the churchyard of their tiny hometown of Hergenfeld. Following Sal's death in 2004, Doris continued to explore the world, enjoying Costa Rica with her dear friend, Millie, and a trip to the southwest with her fellow Cedar Crest residents & daughter.
In her final 13 years living at Cedar Crest Village, she enjoyed playing cards nightly with friends and cultivated a beautiful flower garden on the patio of her home. She loved her 4th child, her chihuahua Tia, and enjoyed visiting the Canada house with her family every summer. She loved taking pictures for a few decades and has left us stacks of photo albums from over the years. She had an exuberance for life, she loved hearing about the adventures of the grandchildren and being a part of all the family activities. We will always remember her unfailing positive support, warm smile and love for us.
She is lovingly survived by her daughters, Lori Avarella and her husband Russell, and Terri Bayles and her partner George Clark; her grandchildren, Christian and Camille Avarella, and Jessica, Sarah and Samantha Bayles; her foster daughter Geraldine Moore; her lifelong friend, Ellen Constantine, and her goddaughters, Linda Constantine Schlekau and Joanne Anzalone. She was predeceased by her husband, Salvatore, in 2004.
A graveside service will be held October 14, at 10:30 am, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
In lieu of flowers, Doris would loved to have seen donations sent to the National Audubon Society.
Respectfully serving families for generations
