Obituary of Michele G. Madonna
Michele G. Madonna-Scherreik, RN, 67, of Bloomingdale, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at her home on June 1, 2022. Born in Westchester, Michele grew up in Rockland County. She earned her BS at SUNY Utica-Rome and her Master of Science degree in Nursing from NYU.
Michele was a pioneer in the field of nursing care for Multiple Sclerosis with extensive clinical experience spanning over 30 years. Her positions included MS Clinical Nurse Coordinator at the Neurological Institute of Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, MS Clinical Nurse Coordinator at the NYU Medical Center/Hospital for Joint Diseases, and Director of Clinical & Educational Services at the NYC Chapter of the National MS Society. She developed The Janet Pearce Nursing Fellowship/Training Program, the MS Nurse Orientation Training Curriculum/Program, and the Janet Pearce Advanced MS Nursing Training Program, which received an award from the National MS Society. Michele was honored with NYC Chapter’s Professional Education Award and served on the Board of Directors for the International Organization of MS Nurses and on the Clinical Advisory Committee of the National MS Society/NYC Chapter.
In addition to her ground-breaking work for enhanced MS care, Michele was deeply devoted to her faith and was a valued volunteer within her church, at her boys’ schools, and within her community. Her compassion and readiness to serve showed up in all aspects of her life.
Michele is survived by her husband, Robert Scherreik, and sons, Joseph and Matthew; her siblings, Victoria Tinen, Christine Madonna, Patricia Madonna, and Neil Madonna; and four nieces and a nephew. She is preceded in death by her twin sons, Derek and Erik; her parents, Lucy Madonna (née Silvestris) and Patrick Madonna; and her brother-in-law, Thomas A. Tinen.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 5, between 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm at M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, 781 Newark-Pompton Turnpike, Pompton Plains, NJ. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, June 6, at 9:30 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 17 Pompton Avenue, Pompton Lakes, NJ, followed by burial of ashes at Maryrest Cemetery, Mahwah, NJ.
