Obituary of Emily Hunter Strunk
Emily Hunter Strunk, 61, of Wayne, died at home Monday, September 6, 2021 in the care of her loving family.
Born in Kearny, Emily was an only child born to Herbert (Bruce) and Jane (Jean) Hunter. Raised in North Arlington, Little Falls, and Clifton, she was a 1978 graduate of Passaic Valley High School.
Faith was always a central part of Emily's life, and it was through her church youth group that she met the love of her life, Gary Strunk. As teenagers the two started dating while regulars of "Campus Life," and just after graduating college, they married in 1981.
Settling in Wayne, Emily and Gary soon welcomed three children. Emily delighted and excelled in her role as a mother. She was ever-present in all the kids' activities, and lovingly welcomed her children’s friends, as well as exchange students into her home. When the kids were in high school, she became the "band mom," and for years ran the Wayne Hills Band Festival.
Emily was a very active member of Cornerstone Chapel in Pompton Plains, where she worked as an Office Administrator and Building Supervisor in addition to volunteering in various ministries. The church was a strong presence in her life, and her faith in God helped mold the central core of her character. She was a strong, outgoing, persistent and loving soul, and was dearly loved by her family and friends.
Together with her family, Emily enjoyed regular trips to Camp Spoffard in New Hampshire, as well as the Cayman Islands and trips to visit family in Colorado. Her favorite pastimes were delving into a good book with a cup of tea and spending time with her best friend, Susan. She was always finding new ways to make memories with the kids and grandkids and loved visiting all the local zoos, libraries, parks, and pools.
Emily is lovingly survived by her husband of 40 years, Gary Strunk; her children, Matthew and his wife Ysabel, Jessica and her husband Kevin, and Rachel and her husband Ron; her honorary children, Erick and Hellen; and her grandchildren, Audrey, Ava, Caleb, Matthew Jr., Ron III, Christopher, and ChloeAnn.
Visiting will be Thursday from 4-8 pm at the funeral home. A Memorial Service will be held Friday at 7 pm at Cornerstone Chapel in Pompton Plains.
Respectfully serving families for generations
