When Joan first moved into Cedar Crest I was an aide there (a newbe myself) and was asked to meet with her & family to help her get acclimated into CC living. I arrived at this beautiful apartment, saw this very attractive women (Mrs. Olstein) who was very busy telling the moving men where they should put everything, she was very meticulous. Met Jon & Laura whom introduced me to there mother, whom would eventually become not only my employer but my dear friend, My Joanie❤ I have such fond memories in the 2 yrs. I worked for the Olsteins @ CC. They treated me as if I was part of the family. Joan & I had a lot of fun together. She loved to go dancing every Wednesday after dinner. Everyone loved to watch her dance (especially to the song, "The Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash) She made so many friends. I loved to listen to ALL her stories! From growing up in Pottsville, Pa. to how she met Elliot Olstein & always a glow about her when she spoke of her 2 son's, Jon & Erik. Then there was her adventures with her daughter in laws Laura & Kathy and her 5 grandchildren. Truly an AMAZING FAMILY!!! I feel truly blessed in knowing each and every one of them! I want to thank Jon & Erik for entrusting me with the care of their beautiful Mother!!! She will be dearly missed by all who knew her, especially me! Till we meet again may you Rest in Peace My Joanie

I remember Mrs. Olstein as a beautiful lady and a devoted mother and wife. As a shy kid growing up I always felt happy and comfortable chatting with Mr. and Mrs. Olstein because they were very warm and down to earth. Most of all, I know from conversations and friendships with her family what a kind, intelligent and loving person she was, because she has passed that along to the next generation through her words and actions. Sending love to all.

Where do I start? “Aunt” Joan was the mother of my lifelong and best friend, Jon, and his older brother Erik, whom I always looked up to. She was the devoted wife of Elliot, who was a mentor to me as I began my adult career. She always treated me like family. I remember regular lunches of bologna , cold Pepsi’s, and chocolate cookies, always served with a smile and plenty of laughs in her modern white kitchen. To this day, I still hear her laughing at our stories, and portraying her surprise with a well timed “Jesus, Mary and Joseph!” She was a Saint for putting up with all of us boys and our shenanigans. I will miss her very much, but I know she is now in a much better place. I know that we will meet again, and I am sure she will be waiting with a giant bowl of ice cream. God bless Joan, may she Rest In Peace. All of my love and prayers for her family. Robert Shaw

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Motley-Olstein families as they grieve the passing of Joan. For 40+ years of my life, I have had the privilege and honor of knowing both Elliot and Joan (who I still feel the need to address as Mr. and Mrs. Olstein since I met them when I was only 10 years old). Jon, Erik, and Mr. and Mrs. Olstein always welcomed me into their home and treated me like family. I have so many fond childhood memories including, Mr. Olstein taking me to see his favorite football team (the Jets) and Mrs. Olstein continuously giving me large bowls of vanilla ice cream smothered with Hershey syrup.
While there are simply no words to adequately address your loss, I take some comfort knowing that Mrs. Olstein is at peace. My sincere hope is that one day soon you can remember her with only fond memories, and not with any of the pain and sadness you are experiencing today. Our love and support are with you always.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dearest of friends, Joan. We have many fond memories of our childhood in Pottsville and many wonderful occasions to remember with Joan and Elliot and their family. Her sense of humor will be missed, but we will cling to all the great times we had together.
Until we meet again,
DeDe and Phil Affuso and the Bedway family

I am sorry to hear of Joan’s passing. For me she is eternally Mrs Olstein. The elegant mom of Jon and Eric who retained her Irish sense of humor despite the nonsense she had to put up with adolescent boys marauding throughout her beautiful home. She always made us feel welcome. She would sit with us in her chic white kitchen asking questions about our lives out of a genuine sense of curiosity and amusement. She laughed a lot. She was a good woman. I will miss her. -Glenn Gibbons
