Doris Mae (Bedner) Kelley passed away quietly in her sleep on 12 January 2022 in Morristown , NJ. Following her parents (Jozef Bednarek, Jr. and Rosella Mae Clark), her sister (Marie Claire (Bedner) Bechter and her husband William H. Kelley Jr. into eternal rest.
Her living nieces, nephews and grand nephew are: Linda J.M. Bechter and her son Josef R. Bechter, Dr. Robert J.J. Bechter, Danis Robert Bechter, Shari L. Bechter, Robert “Bobby” Geyer and Judy (Geyer) Scheufele.
Doris grew up in Pompton Lakes, NJ, resided for a time in Haskell, then bought a home in Skyline Lakes, NJ, where she lived for over 40 years. She spent her last few years pampered at Arbor Terrace in Morris Plains, NJ.
Doris was the rebel of her family: a pilot flying small planes with Civil Air Patrol, a member of Civil Defense and later she and her husband both rode Harley’s (motorcycles).
On graduation from Pompton Lakes High School her parents gave her a typewriter. She taught herself and her first typist position was with the Morris Machine Co. in Paterson, NJ. where she worked until her marriage.
Doris holidayed yearly at the Jersey shore with her mother and her two maternal aunts, Martha and Helen. Doris remained very close to her aunts after living with them at Cedar Lake, NJ as a child, during the depression. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and camping in the USA especially in New Hampshire on Bill’s vacations.
Doris spent the majority of her life caring for and rescuing animals with her friend Dee. Doris was always surrounded by animals. She nursed baby birds and rabbits, rescued bats from people’s homes, cared for a one winged swan, had crows unable to be released back into the wild and many dogs and cats from local shelters.
Her final resting place will be beside her mother in the cemetery of Pompton Reformed Church, 59 Hamburg Turnpike, Pompton Lakes, NJ.
Funeral services will be held at the gravesite on January 21st, 2022 at 2PM.
