Marie Frances Roberts (nee Meyer), 92, of Barnegat, formerly a longtime resident of Pequannock (67 years), passed away peacefully with her daughter at her bedside on Tuesday, February 16, 2021. Marie was the daughter of William Meyer and Nora (nee Killeen) Meyer, born in Jersey City and raised in Pequannock.
Marie is predeceased by her loving husband, Ray of 69 years; and her entire Meyer family - parents William and Nora, sisters Eleanor, Agnes, Geraldine, and brothers William, Gerard, and John.
Marie is lovingly survived by her children, Patricia Schoenig, Raymond, and Gary; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
While growing up as a young girl in Pequannock, Marie was introduced and courted by a young Navy man, Ray, who just returned from WWII. The two quickly fell in love (or so the story goes from him!) and wed on May 17, 1947. Together they formed their own roots in Pequannock, raising their children, and residing close to family. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, affectionately known as Nanie, who dedicated her entire life to her family and all those she loved – especially her many nieces and nephews that she cherished so dearly. Marie was a trusted confidant for so many; whether it was just to chat and share breaking family news and updates, get advice on daily life, or share intimate ups and downs. She listened intently and provided a lot of comfort and support when people needed it most. She was the epitome of a self-created independent woman whose joy came from helping others.
If you were lucky enough to know Marie, you know she expressed a lot of love through her cooking. While she made anything and everything under the sun and is considered our family’s Top Chef, she was especially known for her Sunday gravy with meatballs, chicken/meatball parmigiana, sausage and peppers, Nana Meyer’s shrimp salad, and chicken/beef soup (bone broth a la Marie) that accompanied every roast dinner and also her famous strawberry cupcakes.
Some of her fondest memories that she liked to reminisce most were those of her childhood and the tough life that they lived, starting with no running water or electricity (and that outhouse!); summer picnics and barbeques with an above ground pool, playing horseshoes with her sisters, New Years Eve gatherings, watching her grandchildren’s sporting events, her Lake Okeechobee snowbird family, and following the Yankees from DiMaggio to Mantle to Jeter to Judge…following in her father’s footsteps who was a big Brooklyn Dodgers Fan!
Marie - our Mom, Nanie, Aunt, and friend, you will be deeply missed on this Earth. Continue to guide and watch over us and be our guardian angel.
