Obituary of Kevin McNierney
Kevin P. McNierney, 73, of Kinnelon, died Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Compassionate Care Hospice in Dover.
Born in Jersey City, he was raised in Haworth, NJ, and graduated from Northern Valley Regional High School. While being educated at Fairleigh Dickinson University, he met Donna LaBarbera at a fraternity party. The two dated and were married in June of 1968, just two weeks before he was sent to Guam with the Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict. Donna accompanied her husband overseas, and lived together with him in Guam for 18 months while he was stationed there.
After being honorably discharged after four years of military service, Kevin returned to FDU to finish his degree. He went on to a career in credit and finance, employed by Westinghouse Credit and Montebert Corp., among others.
Settling first in Pompton Plains, Kevin and Donna welcomed two daughters into their family before moving to Kinnelon in 1986. There, Kevin enjoyed his time as a member of the Community Church of Smoke Rise Choir and volunteering with Willing Hands located in St. David's Episcopal Church. An avid fisherman, he also could often be found casting a line at the Smoke Rise Lake.
In his 50s, Kevin decided to switch careers, and earned his teaching license to teach Special Education at Union High School. He greatly enjoyed that job, though his health required him to retire at the age of 65 in 2010.
In retirement, though, Kevin had more time for fishing and for indulging in his great love of cars (especially his Jeep Wrangler). He also loved his yearly vacations to Maine and volunteering at Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains.
Kevin is lovingly survived by his wife of 49 years, Donna; his daughters, Meredith McNierney Chin and her husband Michael, and Elizabeth McNierney; his sister, Audrey Amberg; his grandchildren, Evelyn and Alexander "Jamie" Chin; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be Friday from 1-4 and 6-8 pm at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be held 11 am Saturday at Our Lady of Magnificat Church, Kinnelon. Burial will follow at the church cemetery after Mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Willing Hands, 91 Kinnelon Road, Kinnelon, NJ 07405 would be greatly appreciated by the McNierney family.
Respectfully serving families for generations
