Alice Troyano, 93, of Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains, formerly of Pequannock and Paterson, died Sunday, April 8, 2018.
Born in Fruita, CO, Alice was one of 12 children born to Joseph and Ellenor Maestas. She met James Troyano in Denver while he was there with the U.S. Army Air Force. Sweeping her off her feet at a local dance, he moved her to Florida where he was stationed, and on July 6, 1945, they married.
Settling in Paterson, Alice and James welcomed two daughters, Janey and Charlene. In 1965, the couple moved to Pequannock, where they lived until 2010. Alice moved to Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains after her husband’s death.
A homemaker, Alice had a very busy life as a volunteer. When her girls were young, she was involved in many of their activities, including Brownies and Girl Scouts. She was a very active member of the Suburban Woman’s Club of Pompton Plains, serving in a variety of roles in the organization and even once being awarded “Most Valued Club Woman.” She also volunteered regularly with Dial-A-Ride.
Alice had an appreciation and talent for many of the arts, including oil painting, singing, and sewing. A talented seamstress, she made almost all of her girls' clothes while they were growing up, and won several awards for her creations. She also loved to sing, and was a proud member of the Harmony Singers in Wayne.
Alice was delighted by the birth of her grandson, Michael, and loved him dearly. She was happy, too, when he made her a Great-Grandma, with the birth of his two daughters.
Alice is lovingly survived by her daughters, Janey DeLuca and her husband Victor, and Charlene Troyano; her siblings, Jo Thomaidis, Eileen Varin, Maxine Doss, Leslie Renner, Carmen Astorquia, and Henry Maestas; her grandson, Michael Nuzzo and his wife Nancy; her great-granddaughters, Isabelle and Amelia Nuzzo; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, James Troyano, in 2010, as well as by several brothers and sisters.
A Memorial Gathering will begin 10 a.m. Friday, April 13 at the Chapel at Cedar Crest Village, Pompton Plains. A Service will begin at 11 a.m. Cremation will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Alice's memory to a local animal shelter or wildlife charity would be greatly appreciated by her family.
