Donald K. Hackney

Donald Kenneth Hackney of Pompton Plains, New Jersey died on April 8, 2018.  He was 81.

Born in Baltimore in 1936, he moved to Pompton Plains in 1939 when his father was relocated for work. He graduated from Butler High School in the class of 1954, attended Rochester Institute of Technology and Teterboro School Of Aeronautics.  He worked in various technical positions throughout his career, eventually launching his own supermarket service business in the early 1990’s where he worked until his regular retirement. Never one to keep still, he realized he enjoyed working and re-entered the workforce for Precision Forms in Butler, NJ where he worked until shortly before his death.

He was an avid musician, collecting and playing trumpets, alto horns, trombones, baritones, euphoniums, tubas, sousaphones, keyboards and bass guitars. He had a wide vocal range and could sing from bass to tenor. His love of music began in the 1940’s with trumpet lessons, and until shortly before his death, was still very active in multiple local bands. These include the Bloomingdale Cornet Band (joined in 1953), Butler American Legion Band, Jacksonville Chapel Band, North Jersey Concert Band and New Horizons Band of Morris County.

Motorcycles were another love of Don. He began riding on an early Harley Davidson as a teen and kept on riding through seven decades. Only when he reached 80 did he decide to downsize to a lighter Suzuki.

Until a recent heart attack, he was extremely active with his music, motorcycles, friends, neighbors and his family.

He was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Nora. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Christine, of Kinnelon, NJ; and his grandchildren, Julia, Ian and Miles -- who loved him very much.

Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 pm at the funeral home. Cremation will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Chilton Hospital Foundation, 97 West Parkway, Pompton Plains, NJ 07444 would be greatly appreciated by the Hackney family.
