Jane W. Gabel

Jane W. Gabel, 85, of Pompton Plains, formerly of Massachusetts, died Monday, January 8, 2018 at Mountainview Gardens, Cedar Crest Village, Pompton Plains.

Born in Ravena, Michigan, she was raised in Muskegon, Michigan. While attending high school there, she met and fell in love with Creighton Gabel. The two married soon after graduation, and together attended the University of Michigan, where Jane studied English.

Moving to Scotland with Creighton while he pursued his PhD at the University of Edinburgh, Jane gave birth to her first child there: their son, James. Returning to the states, they lived briefly in Chicago, where two more children were born: daughters Molly and Anne. The family finally settled in the Boston area, though, and the Gabels called Massachusetts home for many years thereafter.

A homemaker, Jane delighted in traveling the world with her husband, an Anthropologist. Together, they lived in Rhodesia, Kenya and Liberia, and would stay for extended periods in Egypt while Creighton worked as a Guest Lecturer there.

After retiring, the couple enjoyed their winters in Vero Beach, Florida. Always fond of warm weather, Jane thought any day above 70 degrees was a good one, and so wintering away from the cold Northeast suited her well.

Following Creighton's death in 2004, Jane continued to reside in Massachusetts and enjoyed Florida, but due to declining health, moved to Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains 5 years ago. While a resident at Cedar Crest, Jane became a resident of the Memory Ward, and was enveloped in a nurturing, caring relationship there with her fellow residents and the nursing staff. The family was delighted to see how well Jane was cared for, and how happy she was, in her final years.

Jane is survived by her children, James "Jimmy" Gabel, Molly Ben-Menachem and her husband Tamir, and Anne C. Gabel and her longtime partner, Dave Ellis; her brother, Anson Whitfield; her grandchildren, Andy, Beth, Ginny and Jonathan; and her great-grandchildren, Katherine, Nicholas, Melanie Jane and Zachary.

Funeral services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Memory Ward at Mountainview Gardens, Cedar Crest Village, 4 Cedar Crest Drive, Pompton Plains, NJ 07444 would be greatly appreciated by Jane's family.
