Josephine “Jay” Colca, 83, a longtime resident of Pequannock, died Wednesday, February 22, 2012.
A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains. Burial will follow at the First Reformed Church Cemetery, Pompton Plains. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the funeral home.
Born in Garfield, Josephine was the daughter of Filippo and Mary Spezio. She met her future husband, Charlie Colca, at Barcelona’s Restaurant in Garfield. Josephine impressed Charlie with her huge appetite, despite her petite size, and the two married on April 19, 1953. Settling in Pequannock in 1959, the couple raised a son and a daughter, and in Charlie’s words, they’ve been “eating ever since.”
In addition to raising her children, Josephine worked in the cafeteria at Wayne Hills High School for 16 years. She was super friendly, and enjoyed chatting with everyone she met.
Josephine is lovingly survived by her husband, Charlie; her son, Keith Colca and his wife Isabelle; her daughter, Karen Peer; her brothers, Anthony and Peter Spezio; her sisters, Joan Spezio, Carmella Pinto and Phyllis Sabo; her brother-in-law, Joseph Colca and his wife Katherine; her sister-in-law, Rosalie Lambert; and her grandchildren, Matthew, Daniel, Ashley, Samantha and Brian; and lots of nieces and nephews.
