History
The Scanlan funeral history began four generations ago in Paterson, when Martin John Scanlan, an irish immigrant, opened Scanlan Funeral Home on Market Street in the 1880s. Marty’s two sons, Charlie and John, joined the family business in the 1920s, continuing the Scanlan good name in funeral service.
With the 1950s sprawl out of the cities and into the suburbs, John sold the Market Street funeral home and opened a branch in nearby Pompton Plains, buying a large farm home on the Newark-Pompton Turnpike.
In 1967, John renamed his funeral home in Pompton Plains the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home.A 1968 addition to the original home added a large funeral chapel, allowing the funeral home to serve multiple families at the same time. John’s two sons, Marty and Charlie, joined the family business in the 1970s. Charlie took over as manager upon John’s death in 1984, and is known throughout the region as a kind, compassionate and honest man.
Charlie’s daughter Kiera joined the firm in 2006 after completing her education at Susquehanna University and the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service, and serves as the forth generation of Scanlan funeral professionals.
Details
The M. John Scanlan Funeral Home is a 1902 Dutch Colonial home, situated on three acres of beautifully manicured grounds. Our funeral home was designed for spacious and commodious reposing rooms, superbly appointed and richly carpeted, together with adjoining rooms for the privacy and convenience of immediate relatives. We offer two viewing rooms, the small chapel occupying the home’s original dining room and featuring a fireplace and ornate molding. The large chapel seats approximately eighty persons and includes a large greeting area, which works very nicely for fraternal order honorary tributes or wake services and funeral services at the funeral home. Recent upgrades to this room, which was added to the original building in 1968, include ornate molding that matches the original look of the home.

The arrangements office is located at the front entrance. With its fireplace and comfortable chairs, this private suite creates a warm, home-like atmosphere for arrangement conferences.A quiet family room, also with a fireplace, offers a private area for nursing mothers or family members who would just like to excuse themselves for a few quiet moments. In addition, the funeral home has a children’s room with crayons, coloring books and reading material.
Lastly, our selection room features twenty caskets from six different manufactures, in addition to a large urn display, burial clothing, vaults and other memorial items
In addition, our spacious grounds provide very ample parking space.
